Part of the somewhat lacklustre nature of Layers of Fear 2 is that in it’s homage to horror in its many forms, it far too frequently relies upon endless tropes from classics like Nosferatu, The Shining, The Wizard of Oz (!) and even George Méliès’ Le Voyage Dans La Lune (I knew that obscure film class I took at Uni would pay off some day). Because of that, I was hardly ever scared by what was going on. In the end, I found myself more fixated on finding collectibles than to let myself be immersed in the situation.

Worse yet, proceedings are entirely linear, usually consisting of twisting hallways that connect hub rooms full of simplistic puzzles and secret items. The mixture of nautical and Hollywood themes is strange and off-putting, dropping you into a sense of unease that’s quickly ruined by predictable jump scares.

What follows is a walking simulator with an amazingly detailed atmosphere, especially in terms of sound design. Unaware of what’s happening beyond that, you leave your quarters with a simple set of instructions: prepare for a big audition by finding and crafting your character. If you’ve not played it, you really should - it’s a brilliant little experience that delves into the psyche of a troubled Victorian painter.īut never mind that - we’re sadly here to talk about Layers of Fear 2.īloober’s sequel starts you off in the stateroom of a seemingly deserted cruise liner, providing just enough clues for you to place yourself as a Hollywood actor. Much like I was hyped for The Blair Witch Project long before actually interacting with it, I devoured any information I could find ahead of playing Layers of Fear itself.

Despite some creative visual tricks, Layers of Fear doesn’t have sharp enough teeth to maintain its bite.Bloober Team knew just how to market its first title directly to me: before knowing what Layers of Fearwas, I received random documents in my physical mailbox, teasing me with a horrific mystery which would slowly unfold before my eyes. Unfortunately, it only succeeds on the surface level: Sometimes I got pretty surprised when something creepy happened (invariably accompanied by a loud noise), but even that layer eroded over time. In its title, Layers of Fear implies an ability to inspire multi-faceted terror. A few notes and creepy objects allow you to piece together the backstory, but it rarely feels connected to the array of events that are supposed to be scaring you. This problem is made worse by the unremarkable story, which is too vague and sparse to provide any useful context. Instead of pulling off the psychological horror it aims for, Layers of Fear feels more like a haunted house at a local carnival – a relentless parade of jump-scares without the build-up needed to make them effective. This inevitability results in a boring and predictable rhythm, making it impossible for a sense of dread to take hold.ĭespite some structural similarities, this is not the successor to P.T. Every time you enter a room or a hallway, something happens.

After a scary moment, it doesn’t allow players enough breathing room, because the next one is always immediately around the corner. The problem is Layers of Fear shows no restraint. Early in the game, these tricks are novel and unexpected, creating some cool and unnerving moments. Doors disappear, architecture shifts, and reality crumbles. Your surroundings are constantly in flux once you enter an area it can (and almost certainly will) change when your back is turned. As you move through the rooms and corridors, Layers of Fear demonstrates its only strength: an ability to play with your perception. Instead of carefully and deliberately hitting the right atmospheric notes, this experience just bangs on the keys loudly and frequently.Īs an unhinged painter trying to finish a masterpiece, you explore your creepy old house, piecing together the Bad Things that happened to you and your family. Unfortunately, Layers of Fear is not so deft.

The best ones are able to frighten you despite the fact that you are expecting the attempt – something that requires a subtle balance between tension and surprise.
