It takes a period of time and training for a patient to interpret the signals received from a cochlear implant. The signals stimulate the auditory nerve and are conveyed to the brain, which interprets these signals as sounds. The receiver in turn relays these signals into the electrode which has been inserted into the snail-shaped inner ear (cochlea).

The external processor captures soundwaves from the external environment, and and software converts these into electrical signals detected by the receiver.
